Composition and function of muffler
Silencer
Requires basic function to reduce noise and affects pleasant riding comfort of the automobile.
Passes shielding path in exhaust gas chamber to reduce noise and uses noise reduction and absorption methods.
This method gives negative effects like decreasing engine power and fuel efficiency because this functions to prohibit emission of smooth exhaust gas.
In order to offset this side effect and noise as much as possible, it is important to find the best condition from design through continuous simulation, interpretation and test.
DFP
DPF is equipped in the muffler to reduce the emission from the engine and the DPF is largely of PM purification device(DOC) and NOx purification device (SCR).
Formerly, only DOC is included but as the international environmental laws are fortified, trend is both DOC and SCR are included.
DOC is an equipment to collect PM(soot). When it is used for certain time, PM becomes saturated condition and back pressure is loading and is connected to decreasing engine power and eventually increases fuel consumption.
Therefore, regular exchange and cleaning is required for a certain period of time.
Bellows
It functions to absorb and block engine vibration and buffer shock and minimize fatigue degree of vent pipe and increase engine life.
In addition to bellows, rounded couple type or spring joint type are used.
Muffler design
Muffler is a part greatly affecting the noise and emission reduction and the performance of engine.
In order to minimize negative effect which is accompanying in improving muffler performance, lots of simulations and tests are required from design stage.
At concept review stage when designing new muffler, diameter of exhaust pipe and capacity of silencer are determined according to engine performance.
Subsequently, placement pipe routes of major parts are determined according to car layout and insulator is added to prevent the exhaust heat if necessary.
Additionally, modeling review is progressed by measuring smooth exhaust flow and back pressure through flow interpretation and executing simulations like mode interpretation and structure interpretation.

Product verification is executed through various reliability tests by manufacturing PROTO samples after modeling fix.
Major reliability tests are vibration exhaust, heat shock, salt water spray, back pressure test, noise test and thermal fatigue test.
